Homework - 6th and 7th Grade
Every night, your child has homework in reading. He/she has to fill out a t-chart recording thinking as he/she reads. We have practiced this in class. For 6A, 6B, and 7A groups, there is an actual assignment sheet for parents to sign each night and t-charts attached so students do not have to make their own. There is also a place on the assignment sheet for students to write in additional assignments. I check these every day or so but collect once per week. Anything not completed for the week will have to be made up after school.
TUTORING
We have tutoring and homework help after school every Tuesday and Thursday. All middle school teachers are available.
BOOKS
Here is a list of the books we are reading in class with links to the questions we are answering. I started most groups with more literal questions to ensure their understanding of the story. Once the groups show they understand the book, we move on to more inferential questions.
The Hobbit listed under reading comprehension questions. These questions are new and more thought provoking than our original questions.
Robinson Crusoe
Little Women
Time Machine if you open this link, each chapter has a separate link for discussion questions that are very thought provoking. They would be perfect for edmodo. I can post them on there or students may do so.
Black Beauty
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - here are some VERY challenging discussion questions. You can do it! We can "talk" about them on edmodo.
The books listed in red are free to download on amazon, googlebooks, iBooks, or available on sites such as literature.org.
ONLINE DISCUSSION BOARD
I am also starting online discussions at edmodo.com. Though each student has to create a profile to participate in the group discussions, they do not have to enter an email address or any other personal information besides their name. The only people allowed to view this site are students that are given the group code by me. If you have any questions about edmodo, you can feel free to email me. Right now we are just testing this out as it is new for many of us. In the long run, I would like the assignments on this site to be mandatory. For those students with cell phones or electronic devices with internet acces, there is a free app.
